SGH receives rrant to improve health care access GRANGEVILLE -- Syringa General Hospital has been awarded $45,800 over a three-year period to improve access to primary medical healthcare services in Idaho County. Grant funding supports the retention of a family practice physician. SGH is one of seven non-profit or governmental organizations statewide to receive a grant from the Rural Health Care Access Program. The Rural Health Care Access Program was established in 2000 to improve access to primary medical care and dental health services in areas designated as Primary Care or Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas or Medically Underserved Areas. In Idaho, 90 percent of the state is designated as a Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area, and 92.4 percent is designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area in Dental Health. One of the most significant health issues for the state is inadequate access to a primary care physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or dentist in rural areas. Rural areas often face challenges to attract and maintain healthcare professionals in their communities. Some factors confronting rural areas, and their healthcare providers, include professional isolation, low reimbursement rates for health services, and vulnerability to market and policy changes. Nineteen Idaho communities applied for the Rural Health Care Access Program Grant in 2006. In addition to SGH, Cascade Medical Center, Caribou Memorial Hospital, City of Grace, City of Spirit Lake, Oneida County Hospital, and Genesis World Mission were selected to receive grants totaling $273,900. |
