GRANGEVILLE -- Idaho County will be seeing more of Officer Brian Hewson these days. The Grangeville resident officially started Aug. 1 as an Idaho County Deputy Sheriff, leaving his lieutenant position with the Grangeville Police Department (GPD) where he has served since 2004. "This is a roving position. He won't be assigned to any one place," said Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings. "He will cover wherever we need him." When citizens call for law enforcement assistance, they want someone right away, and "I want someone available all the time," Giddings said. This position will allow coverage to be maintained uninterrupted, such as during staff vacations or other absences. The move was good for the county, with Hewson's Grangeville experience, according to Giddings, and provides some expanded opportunities he was looking for. But the job is pretty much the same, and the only change is in bosses, "and the bosses [Giddings and GPD Chief Glenn Quantz] get along very well," he said. With Hewson's departure, GPD Chief Quantz has reorganized the hierarchy to replace the lieutenant position with two sergeants. Appointed to these positions last month were Cheryl Randi and Andy Beene. Applicants were chosen after answering a series of questions and responding to scenarios put forth by a review board made of officers from outside agencies including Clearwater County, Kamiah Marshals Office, Lewiston Police Department and Idaho County Sheriff's Office. "Two people will now be sharing duties that the lieutenant was doing on his own," said Chief Quantz, and it will still allow the sergeants "to get out and work the streets." The new positions allow officers some career expansion opportunity within the department, he said, and as a result this opportunity provides a boost in departmental motivation and morale. |
