Joey Higgins wins American Legion oratorical contest

American Legion Post 37 held the 2013 High School Oratorical Contest on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Grangeville Senior Citizens Center. The contest is open to all high school students grade 9-12 including home-schooled students. For information regarding the contest go to the American Legion website at www.legion.org and click on programs then Oratorical Contest. This year Mr. Higgins was both the only contestant and the post winner. He spoke on his original oration entitled: Constitutional Republic. Higgins is the son of Diana and Bill Higgins.
Higgins received a cash award of $100 from Post 37 and progressed to the second district contest. Higgins won the district contest held at American Legion Post 13 in Lewiston and progressed to the area contest where he provided excellent competition for area winner, Aaron Paul, who also won the state contest.
The American Legion Gem Boys State Program provides high school students going into their senior year an opportunity to get a hands-on experience with city, county and state government. Higgins will represent Post 37 June 9-15. Gem Boys State will be held in Nampa, on the Northwest Nazarene University Campus. Post 37 Adjutant, Morris Bentley, is on the Gem Boys State Board and will also attend Boys State as an advisor.
