 | | Contributed photo / Jeff Scott, Avista | | Avista crews on April 23 hung a "Denim Day" banner of jeans across Main Street in Grangeville as part of April Sexual Assault Awareness Month, sonsored in part by YWCA for Idaho and Lewis counties. Denim Day began after an Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction in 1999 because the victim wore jeans. The court stated, "it is common knowledge...that jeans cannot even be partly removed without the effective help of the person wearing them...and it is impossible if the victim is struggling with all her might." The judgment sparked an international protest over myths and attitudes that often blame and re-victimize the rape victim. |
