Funding LPN programs to address shortages
Letter - Yates

Idaho's newspapers are reporting a task force that was appointed by the governor to address the shortage of nurses in our state. Nurses tell me constantly of having to work overtime, extra shifts, etc., because there aren't enough of them to fill the need.
There are waiting lists at all of Idaho's nursing schools. Since training to become a licensed practical nurse requires one year of (mostly clinical) education, the fastest way to increase the number of nurses in Idaho would be to adequately fund LPN programs at our six area vocational schools. One-year vocational programs obviously cost the taxpayer less tax money than do two- and four-year programs. Upon being licensed, the LPN is employable at a $15 per hour wage and can be working toward the associate degree.
