He loved hunting, fishing, mining for gold, piloting small planes and being on log drives. In his later years he was an avid reader, historian, and compiled extensive genealogical records. Boyd, 93, died Sept. 26, 2008, in Spokane, Wash. This formidable man held many titles, Dick, Dad, Grampita, loyal friend and respected teacher. He had an amazing life and along with his beloved wife, Lenneta, they had many great adventures. After graduating in geology from WSU he worked as a gold miner in Idaho for several years. They moved to Panama where he worked on the Panama Canal. This exposure to the Latino culture caused them to look for more of the same. He accepted a job in Colombia, South America, as the industrial relations manager for Texaco Petroleum where his diplomatic efforts as a union negotiator in labor and governmental contracts put him in direct contact with the country's leaders. In 1952, they returned to the U.S. where he took the same position at the Hanford Project in Richland, Wash. He and Lenneta soon realized that they missed the life-style they had grown accustomed to in South America so they returned to Colombia in 1955 where they lived until 1962. They moved back to the U.S., and he went back to college and received a master's degree in Spanish at EWU. He taught there for the next 18 years. He retired from EWU in 1982 and felt that he had completed a full cycle of occupations, so he returned to his love of gold mining. They located a placer claim on a mountain top near Elk City and injected an authentic meaning to the summertime activity of their "golden" years. They spent almost every summer of their lives there and were joined by family members who loved to listen to him tell tall stories, and sing "Oh Susanna" while strumming on his guitar and playing the harmonica. He taught all of us the true meaning of life, as well as how to pick huckleberries the correct way, how to fish the American River, how to pan for gold and roast marshmallows. He is survived by his very loving family that includes daughter, Marta Reyes, (Eric Anderson); son, Gary Boyd, (Sharon Boyd); along with his granddaughters, Heidi, Julie, Adriana, Cristina and Carolina; great-grandchildren, Steven, Koal, Rebecca and Dahlia; nephew, Bill Boyd (Deane); niece, Sharon Gill (Jim) and their children. A memorial service will be held on Oct. 18. Contact Marta at 327-8064 for details. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elk City School, 100 School House Drive, Elk City, ID 83525 or Hospice of Spokane, P.O. Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210-2215. Vonda M.
