Spring prescribed burning under way
Burns being carried out on Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests' lands
By Andrew Ottoson - sports/outdoors reporter

GRANGEVILLE - With favorable weather, the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests have been conducting prescribed burns - and more are planned for this spring.
Salmon River Ranger District has prescribed fire on a total of 4,500 to 6,000 acres in the Blue Mountain / South Fork Squaw Creek, Kessler Creek, South Fork of Skookumchuck Creek, and Slate Creek in the Salmon River drainage. In the Clearwater River drainage prescribed burning will occur in Green Creek, Lightning Creek, Earthquake Basin, Blacktail Butte, and along the South Fork of the Clearwater River. Contact Kevin Chaffee, Josh Warden, Dave Crousser, and Tim Theisen at Salmon River Ranger District at 839-2211 or 983-1950.
Red River Ranger District will be conducting several prescribed burns throughout the district to remove natural fuels and logging slash during upcoming months. Crews have completed six units totaling approximately 70 acres, and have 10 totaling about 150 acres left to do. Some road and trail systems in the vicinity of these projects may be temporarily closed during prescribed burning operations. It may take several days to complete these projects, and they could produce smoke for multiple days following ignition. Contact Josh Bransford or Justin Pappani at Red River Ranger District, 842-2245.
Lochsa Ranger District is planning on conducting a number of small prescribed burns this spring across the southern portion of the district. To date, the district has completed burning on seven units totaling 160 acres. "After we get some rain, we have 135 acres to do," fire management officer Sean Gaines said. Contact Gaines at the Lochsa Ranger District, 926-6419.
