By Lorie Palmer GRANGEVILLE -- If you have children between 1 and 18, don't believe there's no such thing as a free lunch. The summer meal program, sponsored by Chartwells, the food program for Mountain View School District 244, will offer meals from June 23 to Aug. 15. There will not be any food service from June 30 through July 4. Grangeville is eligible for the federal free and reduced lunch program due to the area's number of people who live in poverty conditions. Children ages 1 to 18 are invited to stop in at Grangeville Elementary Middle School from noon to 1 p.m. for a free lunch. "This program is free to all children 1 to 18," explained Maureen Burney, food service director for Chartwells. "Participants are not required to show any I.D. or even be enrolled in our schools." Adults are not required to come with their children; however, if they choose to join their children for a meal, the cost is $3.25. During the lunch hour, public restrooms are not available as no maintenance people are around in the summer to supervise or clean in the GEMS building. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays chef salad will be offered and Tuesdays and Thursdays chicken Caesar salad will be available. Both will come with a garlic breadstick and milk. "We will also have items like pizza, hamburgers, chicken patty sandwiches, and cold ham or turkey sandwiches," Burney said. During the summer the regular Five-Star Salad Bar will not be offered. Burney said menus will be available on the first day of meals, June 23, and students and parents can ask for a menu at this time. Elk City will be offering a limited program as well June 17-20 and July 7-18. Call Delise Denham at 842-2218 for details. Because of the USDA food safety regulations, no takeout meals will be allowed. "The only exception to that is if a child wanted to take a piece of fruit with them," Burney explained. Burney also said as they go through August, mealtimes may be shortened. "History shows a decline in participation, although we typically serve about 120 to 150 children per day for June and July," she said. Youth groups, preschools, day-cares, summer sports and art camps, and any other youth through age 18 are encouraged to eat lunch at GEMS weekdays this summer.
