By Lorie Palmer KOOSKIA -- The county's plea for help from Joint School District 241 fell on deaf ears recently. At the Jan. 17 oversight board meeting for JSD 241, trustees declined to help with costs associated with the deconsolidation election held Nov. 21, 2006. A letter from Idaho County Clerk Rose Gehring stated, "I know the school is not obligated to pay for any of this, but any amount would be of help to me. My election budget went into the minus for the fiscal year 2006 and we already took funds from the fiscal year 2007 budget for this election." Gehring sent to the letter to JSD 241 clerk Tim O'Connor Dec. 14. However, the letter could not be addressed until the January meeting. "To my knowledge we did not ever agree to share costs," said JSD 241 superintendent Dr. Wayne Davis. O'Conner stated the school district did many things to help with the election including calling poll helpers and setting up polling places. "It seems strange to have one public entity paying another -- it's the same money," commented Riggins trustee Joyce Stapleton Barnard. "We definitely appreciate the county's services but I do not believe we owe this money," said board chair Bobbi Bodine of Grangeville. Final election costs came in at $5,625.30, broken out in the following ways: Ã Advertising in the Cottonwood Chronicle, Idaho County Free Press and Clearwater Progress -- $1,450.44 Ã Ballots -- $225.80 Ã Envelopes -- $169.31 Ã Hall rental (five at $50 each) -- $250 Ã Labels -- $7.69 Ã Postage -- $105.84 Ã Wages (workers) -- $3,065.36 Ã Wages (employees) $350.86 |
