Dragging chains cause of series of May 7 fires
( web extra ) - Estimated 30 acres burned near Pollock
By David Rauzi - editor, ICFP
NEWS - Estimated 30 acres burned Pollock due to chain-dragging
POLLOCK - An estimated 30 acres burned in a series of fires May 7, reportedly started by chains being dragged down the highway.
Salmon River Rural and Riggins fire departments crews, along with Forest Service personnel, responded to the incident: seven fires spread along a four-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 95 from Pollock to north of Rapid River. According to John Sangster, SRRFD, dragging chains from a boat trailer being hauled were the suspected cause.
"Apparently, the sparks were enough to set the dry grass on fire," he said. No structures were lost in the fires, though some were closely threatened, he said.
All total, the three agencies fielded 13 engines, 36 personnel and one tender on these fires. Of these crews, eight were smokejumpers out of McCall, diverted from a training exercise to fight these fires.
The fire call came in that day at 11:40 a.m., and crews were on-scene until 8 p.m. USFS and SRRFD crews returned the following day to put out subsequent hotspots.
