Boy Scout Troop 555 from Grangeville is shown preparing for the team sled event.

Ten boys from Grangeville's Troop 555 of the Boy Scouts of America had the opportunity to learn about snow camping and winter survival while competing in team competitions. The Scouts were participants of the Klondike Derby that was held at Elk River Reservoir outside of Elk River, Jan. 19, 20, and 21.
The boys had to first endure a complete equipment check before heading on their outing. While there they participated in individual skills events, and the team sled event. The sled event looks much like a dog sled race, except there are three to five boys with one in the back and the others are pulling the sled that the scouts designed and built themselves. Along the course the boys must compete at five different stations, a mountain pass, fire building and boiling water, shooting a .22, a flood station where they had to lash a log to trees, and staking a claim site. The boys stayed in tents with about three feet of snow outside. The Grangeville scouts received a third place and a fourth place at the event and received a camp stove for their efforts.
The local scouts who participated were Ty Paul, Colton Pilant, Sam Solberg, Nick Smith, Caleb Bass, Eric McHargue, Montana Riener, Tase Blewett, Gavin Tosten and Tom Roll. The leaders who went with the boys were Jim Roll, Shawn Bass and Joe Tosten. Congratulations, Troop 555, for doing so well at the Klondike Derby!
