Recent elk poaching inflames area residents
IDFG News

Local Fish and Game officers would like assistance with any and all information leading to the conviction of the persons responsible for the killing, and leaving to rot, one cow elk and mortally wounding another.
On Saturday morning, January 27, just before 9 am, someone shot the cow elk in Smith Meadows near McComas Meadows. That same person also wounded another elk that ran off to die.
A concerned sportsman drove by and saw the cow elk lying dead some 100 yards from the 648 Road and reported the incident by cell phone. The second animal ran from the area leaving a heavy blood trail. Officers followed the trail but were unable to find the animal. They believed the animal would eventually die from the suspected location of the hit.
At this time of year, big game animals like elk are trying to conserve energy for the long cold of winter. Random shootings like this are too common in the forests surrounding Grangeville. Local citizens hearing of the poaching stated this person does not deserve the privilege to ever hunt again. The cow elk in this case had a healthy calf inside her to be born this spring.
Anyone with information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible can call their local conservation officer, the Idaho County Sheriff's office, or the Citizens Against Poaching Hotline at 1-800-632-5999. All calls can be kept confidential and a reward earned for information leading to a citation.
