ELK CITY -- This past week, although temperatures remained downright cold at night, we had some really wonderful almost-spring-like days. The sun has been out, the air is warm, and people have seemed extra cheery. Keep in mind, this is probably just a winter respite because we know February and March can bring just as much, if not more, snow and winter as December and January. In the meantime, enjoy! Community calendars should be arriving very soon. These will be available for pick up at The Store and notice of their arrival will be posted at the Post Office. Carol and Val's are offering two weekly specials through the month. Tuesday tacos are $2.50 each or three for $6 and on Fridays, if you buy a pizza, you can get a second one-topping pizza half-price. REACH Club is selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts as a fund-raiser for their scholarship program. Students of the Elk City School will be taking orders through Feb. 2. Each box of doughnuts is $8 or two dozen for $14. The original glazed Krispy Kremes will arrive Feb. 13 and will be delivered to those patrons ordering two or more dozen, or may be picked up that day at the school between 5 and 6 p.m. or the following day between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. If you have not been approached by one of the students and would like to show your support (or just want some of these doughnuts), you can order by calling REACH Club at 842-2218. Their goal is to sell 125 dozen doughnuts. Student salespersons are invited to a donut party after school on Feb. 14 where they will enjoy Krispy Kremes, soda and a movie. Top student salesperson will receive a glass chess set. REACH Club has requested you save your Pringles potato chip cans for an upcoming project. Valentine's Day seems a long way off, but if you haven't signed up for the VFW Auxiliary's annual Valentine steak dinner you may want to do so. The dinner is next weekend, Feb. 10th. Dinner starts at 5 p.m. Music by Slide will be featured after dinner. Also for Valentine's Day, The Store has cards and candy available and sweetheart's bouquets will arriving. Winners of the cribbage tournament this week were Suzanne "back-in-the-day" Carpentier, first; Dick Park, second; and Marv Forsman, third. The community meeting to discuss Elk City days went well and things are underway. Lots of plans have been made for kids' games, posters and advertising have been drafted, and we are looking for an indoor location for a photo art exhibit. Any ideas you have are welcome. There will be a public meeting this evening, Wednesday, Jan. 31, in the Forest Service conference room at 7 p.m. to discuss Idaho Department of Environmental Quality 319 Water Quality Improvement Grant Program. DEQ Director Dave Pisarski will give a presentation with handouts available and will answer questions. Following, Framing Our Community will have a brief presentation on their 2007 American River Water Quality Improvement Project. Landowners interested in participating in this or future projects can contact FOC at the meeting this evening or by calling 842-2939. |
