Welcome Back Night at school set today
Elk City
By PEOPLE (Elk City) - Jamie Edmondson
ELK CITY -- A Welcome Back Night at Elk City School is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 4:30-6 p.m. This is an opportunity to see the students' classrooms, books and curriculum, sign-up for school and food programs and update REACH Club enrollment forms all in the same night. Each classroom will receive an incentive for bringing their parents, so write it down on the calendar and plan on attending.
Robert Nida, from One Hour Photo in Grangeville, will take school pictures in mid-October. Just in time for the pictures to go out with your holiday cards. Community members are welcome to come and get their portrait or family photo taken as well.
REACH Club's Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 8, right after school until 4:15 p.m. We appreciate all of our volunteer leaders -- Randy Bartlett, Stan Denham, Amy Jones, Savannah Tow and Dana Paisley. Without their volunteer leadership, our Scout programs couldn't exist.
St. Mary's Hospital and Clinic will be having clinic hours at the Elk City Clinic on Sept. 17. Call the Cottonwood Clinic at 962-3267 for an appointment.
Dixie is having a community yard sale to benefit the Dixie Fire Department on Saturday, Sept. 4, starting at 9 a.m. Food will be available. Call Roxie at 842-2571 for information.
A number of fires popped up last week. The following information was supplied by Bill Salmon and the fire information Web site at: www.fs.usda.gov/goto/nezperce/fire for those of you who don't have a scanner or access to the Internet to check on fire status,
The Moose Fire, on Moose Butte had crews on it, assisted by helicopter water drops. It was about two acres and showed no growth on Thursday.
Then another one popped up about a half-mile south of the Red River Ranger Station, just off the road to Dixie. The heat and high winds late in the morning made this fire take off fast, initially toward the Ranger Station. There were multiple water and slurry drops on this fire, which had been named the Fitness Fire and was about 16 acres. This one apparently showed no growth on Thursday.
Firefighters were successful in building a line around the main perimeter of both fires; however they are not contained.
Late in the afternoon, another fast-moving fire was discovered a mile or so southwest of 14-Mile Tree, and then almost immediately, a worse one just northwest of Spread Creek Point, southwest of Dry Saddle. At the time it was reported by the patrol plane, it was described as a "blowup -- big, bad, and ugly," with smoke rising 1,000 feet, and spotting 1/4 mile ahead of the fire front.
More fires were then reported by lookouts and the patrol plane, near Sabe Saddle and in Sabe Creek. The Magruder Road apparently was closed at the Red River Road.
It was reported on Sunday by the helicopter pilots who stayed at the hotel that the rain put these fires out on Saturday. Snow was about the 7,000-foot level.
Meetings: Water and Sewer, 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 7; American Legion, Wednesday, Sept. 8.
   Birthdays: Rachael Smith.
   Anniversaries: Jill and Shawn Mann.
