History (contributed by Bill Salmon): In addition to being Elk City's doctor, dad was also, at various times, the justice of the peace and local assistant to the coroner. As J.P., he was once to marry a couple from Orogrande. The couple came to Elk City as arranged, but the license didn't arrive on the stage. Rather than go back to Orogrande to wait, the couple got a room in the hotel. Some wag hung a sign on their door, reading, "License Applied For." -Dick Boyd in 2002, telling about the adventures of his father, "Doc" Boyd, during the period from 1920 to 1940.
