Back Country Meals have public lunch at noon
Elk City
By PEOPLE (Elk City) - Jamie Edmondson
ELK CITY -- For those of you who missed my column last week -- cyberspace struck again. Apparently my attachment didn't reach the Free Press even though my computer says it sent it! I didn't get the message from the Free Press informing me that it didn't make it in time to resubmit it. So much for these new fangled inventions! Sorry.
Back County Meals have lunch at noon and are open to the public every Monday in the VFW dinning room and the cost is $4 per person, 50 cents extra to go. If you would like yours to go, call Suzanne at 842-2393. The menu is subject to change if they get food donated that needs to be prepared right away. The following is the menu for March: 1st, French dip/fries, pasta salad, dessert; 8th, BBQ pork ribs, coleslaw, baked beans, dessert; 15th, corn beef and cabbage, rolls, dessert; 22nd, spaghetti, green salad, garlic bread, pineapple upside down cake; 29th, chicken wings, potato salad, corn bread, dessert.
Another note on the newly re-formed PTO. Their meetings will be the third Monday of each month at the Elk City School at 6:30 p.m. with the first one to be held on March 17. Everyone is invited to attend and child-care will be provided. The PTO plans to have an auction in July to raise money for equipment and games for the school. If anyone has items they would like to donate contact the Corner Express at 842-2884, Lori Lindsey at 842-2740, or Carmon Chlebowski at 842-2699. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Family Night Bingo will make its appearance on Saturday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. It is sponsored by, and designed to raise money for, the Backcountry Meals program. There will be prizes which makes this kind of event a lot of fun. Prizes include, but are not limited to, a gun scope for the blackout card, pancake grill with skillets, turkeys and hams, gift certificates, a Winchester knife set, and a fish fillet set just to name a few. Children are welcome so bring the whole family. I understand that the VFW has purchased and is having installed air filters/purifiers. For those of us who don't smoke it will make the air much easier to breath.
Sage Bryden is wearing a new hat in our community beyond that as an EMT. She has developed a soccer program for the children in our community through the REACH Club After School Program. We have students participating from first eighth grade and meet for practices on Monday and Tuesday with games on Friday. The students are on two teams, Deceptions and Autobots and will be making T-shirts for their teams. They are working their foot skills in addition to learning the rules and playing the game.
The REACH Club Scouts have been taking turns playing with bunnies for Sage (she is also an Angora rabbit breeder). They enjoy playing with the kits and seeing them grow. Cub Scouts are focusing on finishing their achievement projects for the year and completing electives for their Gold and Silver Arrowheads. Magic is going to be a new focus for the Cub Scouts so be ready to be awed. The Girls Scout Daisies are working on manners, etiquette and self esteem. The Girl Scout Juniors are working on science experiments and finishing up their winter sports badge. They went downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding.
Delise will be teaching a first aid and CPR class to the middle school class at Elk City School. This will take place in March and should prepare them for emergencies that they may experience. The students who are scouts will be able to earn a first-aid badge for their participation. Thanks to Elk City Ambulance for donating their first aid/CPR books for the course.
The 4-H program is up and running, thanks to Teresa Enos, our community 4-H leader. Cross-country skiing is about to wrap up after four skiing adventures. They are fortunate to be able to use Travis York's field in front of the school. It is a convenient location with subtle enough hills for beginners. Thanks, Travis! Other projects that will be starting soon will include scrapbooking, baby-sitting, candy making, alternative heritage, Making the Most of Me, pet rabbit and swine. There are three girls and one boy who are taking swine and will buy their pigs in mid-April from Hinkleman in Cottonwood. It is always exciting to look at the piglets and try and choose what they hope will be the next grand champion! The Elk City Hotel Gift Shop carries animal feed and gives a 10 percent discount for 4-H animal projects. If you have not registered your child, or if you would like to lead a 4-H project, contact Teresa by March 20.
Local artist, Gloria Teats, will be offering a painting class at the Dixie Community Center, March 22-26 for students of all levels. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The fee is $150 for the entire week. For information call Gloria at 839-2305.
Friends of the Elk City Library say, wow, and thank you so much to all who supported the third annual beer and wine tasting event Saturday evening, March 6. According to Sue Phillips more than $1,300 was brought in in moneys made from the silent auction, book sales, admission, donations, and the sale of wine and beer! A huge thanks goes out to everyone who helped out, whether you assisted with the planning, created items for the night, setup for the event, donated to the silent auction, bought books, made a yummy appetizer, served wine and/or beer, cleaned up afterward, or came out and attended, your contribution is so appreciated! It is so wonderful to live in such a supportive community! Look for details in next week's Elk City news.
As this is a long article, I will report next week on issues concerning Frontier Telephone Co. and their long distance policy for Internet users in our community.
"War is not the best engine for us to resort to; nature has given us one in our commerce, which if properly managed, will be a better instrument for obliging the interested nations of Europe to treat us with justice." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Thomas Pickney, 1797
History: He then went further on the Indian trail until he came to another river, which is now called Red River. James found lots of gold on the top gravel. He then went back to American River, showed his partners what he had and they decided to sell out for $50 each to a party of other prospectors who had come along. They then headed for Red River. They dammed the river and went to work.
