Santa's 2006 helpers would like to thank the entire community for its generous giving spirit at Christmas time. With the community's help and kindness they were able to provide food and assistance to 36 families. The generosity helped put Christmas smiles on 79 little faces for 2006 Christmas morning. Santa's helpers also provided dinner for single seniors, which spread more joy around Christmas tables. The Santa helpers wish to extend their appreciation, "It is a pleasure to live in such a generous community that really cares for its friends and neighbors. The support was overwhelming."
Kudos to two special Christmas elves, Lorry Harper and Linda Kern, for all their work and organization done to make the Christmas project happen each year. Helping Santa is a huge undertaking and these two ladies go above and beyond each year to help our Salmon River children. Thanks, Lorry and Linda. Salmon River community really appreciates your hearts and your many hours of giving. The annual Riggins Science Fair sponsored by the Riggins Recreational Department will be held Feb. 7, 8 and 9, beginning at 9 a.m. each day. The Science Fair is open to all students -- home schoolers are encouraged to participate. You can call Sharon Boggan at the City of Riggins, 628-3394, for more information or pick up registration forms at the City Hall. Plan now to visit the SRHS multipurpose room and check out the talent of these budding scientists.
Riggins is growing! Riggins has expanded its city limits to include properties on Cemetery Hill, Salmon River Experience Raft property, south to Squaw Creek, up to "Thach Heights," and over to the old mill site. It has been a long-term goal of the Riggins City Council to annex all properties receiving city services. With recent changes in the law, it has made it possible to extend the city limits to those properties. The annexation is good for Riggins with the additional tax base providing financial support for the operation of the City Fire Department, law enforcement, library and the park.
The Riggins Urban Renewal district and Ten-Year Plan were formally accepted by the City of Riggins Council meeting December 11, 2006. Forming the Urban Renewal District is a major milestone for the City Council and was done with the help and support of John Austin of the Panhandle Area Council and Brown's Industries. The District will have limited impact on the city taxpayers, but will provide financial support for the much-needed sewer and water upgrades. Urban Renewal is a method to retain the taxes from the District's new development for infrastructure improvements. The Agency's first priority project will be the City of Riggins' sewer upgrade. This is an excellent method of using tax revenue generated by new development to finance the projects to upgrade the utility systems being impacted by this growth. A copy of the Urban Renewal Plan is available on the city's Web site, www.rigginsidaho.org.
The Salmon River Super Bull competition will be held on Armed Forces Day Saturday, May 19, at the new White Bird Rodeo arena located near the twin bridges on U.S. Highway 95. Todd Clift and Chad Shaw with help from the White Bird Rodeo group will sponsor this event. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Armed Forces to show appreciation to the men and women who serve America in every branch of the military, which is why Chad and Todd chose this date. Mark your calendars now for this exciting event!
Only a few more basketball games in February for the 2006-07 season! SRHS girls played their last regular season game last week.
