By (Lowell/Syringa) - Marie Smith
LOWELL/SYRINGA -- Carol Sue Hauntz and her family drove upriver last Sunday. She's a retired Grangeville teacher that has a spark of real life experience in her smile. Don't call her just plain Carol, she goes by Carol Sue, and she reads this article and enjoys hearing about the MERMS. Her daughter and son-in-law just moved back to Grangeville and they came along with her and her husband for the beautiful Mothers' Day drive. Thanks for stopping by, Carol Sue. The Lochsa River came up to 7-1/2 feet during the weekend with the unusually warm weather, and now we have rain and cooler days ahead. Three Rivers had big whitewater trips and all went well, and Bear Paw Outfitters had a trip as well. They meet and stay at the Wilderness Inn, they all had some carnage, but came away just fine. ROW, from Syringa, also known as River Dance Lodge, as well as Lewis and Clark, who gears out of Missoula, Mont., were all out on the mighty Lochsa training guides, and taking out folks for a ride on the river and maybe getting wet. The other company out there is TARKIO who is headed up by Land and Erica Heflin. Land celebrated his 40th birthday along the river this weekend, and he and Erica are expecting their first little Heflin at the end of the summer. All in all it was a great river weekend and some of the rafters were even kind enough to bring their mothers. We had quite a combination of guests this weekend, as always -- one guy used to work for Sherry Nygaard up at Coolwater Ranch before they tore the house down, one guy had a booth across from us at the Spokane Sport Show this spring, we had Nicole and her boyfriend who manages the Western Motor Inn in Kooskia, we had Jessica Beaman and her baby-sitter's daughter and father from Grangeville, we had some guys with eight four-wheelers and eight kids just up to have a good time, two cabins full of turkey hunters from Idaho Falls, and a guy who rented a single room and cooked all his own meals out on the picnic table for six days straight, smelled good too! He rode his bike, took a hike, and had a campfire every night. Then we had Great-gramma Martha visiting from Lewiston for the weekend, who helped cook her own Mother's Day dinner at 94, and she did most of the dishes, wouldn't let us near the sink. Miss Ruthie crashed on her bike and had quite the scrape on her elbow and knee. When we were cleaning it up, I asked her if it hurt, she said, "Not as bad as when I broke my arm last year!" So, we got that going for us. |
