Local school districts strive to make AYP
Cottonwood hits the mark
By ICFP community/schools reporter - Lorie Palmer

Local schools raised their reading and math proficiency scores, however, only one school district made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
Cottonwood Joint School District 242 made AYP while Mountain View School District 244, Salmon River Joint School District 243 (Riggins) and Kamiah Joint School District 304 are still striving to reach those benchmark goals.
Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Idaho is required to calculate and report the AYP of every public school, based on results of the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). The ISAT is the statewide standardized test that measures student performance in reading, mathematics and language usage in grades 3-8 and 10. Students also take the science ISAT in grades 5, 7 and 10, but those scores are not counted toward AYP.
To make AYP, a school must meet the student achievement goals set by the Idaho State Board of Education in 41 different target areas during a given school year. The 41 targets include students in the entire school, students with disabilities, students with limited English proficiency and students who are economically disadvantaged.
The student achievement goals were increased in the 2009-2010 school year. To make AYP this year, 85.6 percent of students in a school had to reach grade-level proficiency in reading, compared to 78 percent last year. In math, 83 percent of students in a school had to reach grade-level proficiency this year, compared to 70 percent last year.
"One target area where one student has not made progress can skew the entire results," said Mountain View superintendent Greg Bailey. "I am proud of our kids and staff and the successes they have had."
MVSD has 90.4 percent proficiency in reading overall and 84.6 percent in math.
Additional local school district results are as follows:
Ã Salmon River Joint School District 244 (Riggins): 85.5 percent proficient in reading, 82.6 percent in math.
Ã Cottonwood Joint School District 242 (Prairie schools): 94.8 percent proficient in reading and 95 percent in math.
Ã Kamiah Joint School District 304: 92.2 percent proficient in reading, 86.1 percent in math.
Ã Statewide: 92.3 percent proficient in reading, 88.2 in math.
AYP results for each school and district are available on-line at www.sde.idaho.gov.
