No backpacks: What parents, kids are saying
By ICFP community/schools reporter - Lorie Palmer
What parents and students are saying:
Ã I see the students' frustration with this, however, I feel like we need to give it a try and see how it works before we go much further. I applaud the high school for being proactive at keeping our students safe. -- Chandra Eimers, parent
Ã Do we currently have a problem with guns, drugs, etc., in the classrooms? I would say if there is not an issue then there does not need to be a reason for no backpacks in class. I feel, coming from a child who has motor skill issues, that this will be a problem for her in the future. My child is only in the first grade this year and hopefully by the time she is in high school this issue will be resolved. I just hope the teachers are going to be really generous about the kids making it to class on time and if they are trying to get to class with projects then they will be able to make more than one trip. If there is a problem with guns and drugs they should be checking bags at the door and not even giving the kids a chance to get illegal items in the building. -- Jody Keeler, parent
Ã For me, it's not that big of a deal, it's just different. What I'm more worried about are the activity fees and what having those fees will do to our music programs and other activities. -- Kara Stefani, senior
Ã If they are going to take their backpacks away, then they need to give them more time between classes so they can get there books ready for the next class. -- Heather Cullin, parent
Ã I think its ridiculous! If I don't have a backpack with me I won't be able to get to my locker and back to class on time and I will end up not being prepared. So that will be a bother for teachers because everyone will be wanting a hall pass to go get the stuff they didn't have time to get. If we only get three minutes in between classes that will make it even more difficult. I propose that if we have to go through with the no backpack rule we should at least get more time in between classes. -- Madeline Schwartz, sophomore
