| By Andrew Ottoson - sports/outdoors reporter GRANGEVILLE -- Kamiah won coach Tina Ulmer's first Central Idaho League title in anticlimatic fashion, opening up an 18-point lead with a run that spanned the break between the first and second quarters of a 58-35 victory over the Bulldogs on Friday night, Jan. 27. Ulmer's Kubs had shared the league title with Grangeville once before, but never won it outright. "It gives us home court in the district tournament, which is the main thing," Ulmer said, noting that earning it on the Bulldogs' floor was especially satisfying. "We've never won there, and we just don't play well there. And that was true on Friday night...defensively, we gave them too many easy baskets." After the teams combined for six points during the first three minutes, a point-counterpoint flurry of long jumpers including threes by Kyndahl Ulmer, Chantel Key, Bailey Nygaard and Megan Sullivan put Grangeville behind by one possession, 14-11. Nygaard and Ulmer kept on hitting, but the Bulldogs offense went silent. A traditional three-point play by Emily Lane put the Kubs up by 14 early in the second quarter, and two more jumpers from Nygaard and Ulmer made it 29-11. The Bulldogs staunched the flow with baskets by Taylor Canaday and Madeline Schwartz, trailing 29-15 at halftime, and sparking an 11-1 run that made it an eight point game midway through the third quarter. With two baskets off of strong post moves, Canaday pulled Grangeville within seven late in the third quarter. Ulmer said Kamiah had matched defenders one-on-one with Canaday and Sullivan, and played three in zone coverage -- something they had not tried all season. But Shelby Cloninger, who sat out much of the contest with foul trouble, led a late charge after she drew Canaday's fourth personal. Cloninger scored eight fourth quarter points, totaling 11 as one of four Kubs in double-digits, along with Nygaard (18), Lane (13) and Ulmer (14). Ulmer added 10 rebounds to post a double-double. For the season, those four average double-digit points: Cloninger with 15.3 per game is their high scorer, with Ulmer (13.5), Nygaard (10.6) and Lane (10.1) all capable of carrying the burden. "Bailey especially has scored a lot lately," Ulmer said. "She's recognizing when teams double Shelby, and taking the shots she needs to take. They all are, really." Canaday scored 16. Coming -- District II tournament top seed Kamiah will host Orofino tonight, Wednesday Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. Grangeville will play CDA Charter at 7 p.m. the same night in Lapwai. Should they both win, the Kubs and Dawgs will play for the district title at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 in Kamiah. The remaining games in the double elimination tournament will be played on Feb. 8, 10 and 11 (if necessary). Lapwai High School will host Couer D' Alene and their opponent; otherwise, the highest seed will host. |
