by Matthew Neal Idaho County Free Press Dr. Hollopeter celebrates Fourth with Firecracker Fun Run GRANGEVILLE --- According to Grangeville's Dr. Wayne Hollopeter, MD, liberty and the pursuit of happiness start with life. For him, he celebrates life and health on the Fourth of July by running in the Border Days Firecracker Fun Run. Hollopeter is a multi-generational physician who has taken care of Grangeville's citizens for more than 30 years. He has participated in the fun run since it first started, more than 30 years ago. "There are people here that I have taken care of since I moved here," Hollopeter said. He has delivered children, and their children, and their children. "You see people who come back year after year, and people who moved away and come back for Border Days and push their kids in strollers." The fun run is just under three miles. The course starts in the downtown area, and weaves through and around town ending back downtown. "It's a distance most people can cover," Hollopeter said. "Some people train for it while other people just do it just as a walk, and some people bring their dogs, and some people are pretty competitive," he said. Hollopeter is a regular runner. He runs two to three miles four or five times a week to stay fit and healthy. "I think a lot of people think you have to be competitive, that you have to be a `real runner' to do it but no, you can walk if you want. It doesn't matter, everybody has fun and you don't have to be a competitor," he said. You can bet, however, that Hollopeter will be competitive, as he has something to lose at this year's fun run --- money. The good doctor plans on donating $10 toward Relay for Life for any runner who crosses the finish line before he does. Hollopeter said he also plans on running very fast. Yet, the essence of the fun run is to celebrate the Fourth of July. "It's a good way to celebrate the fourth, and I think that is what the fun run is about. Some people go to the rodeo, some people barbecue, but for me, it's the fun run. I think it's a real privilege to go out and celebrate your health," Hollopeter said. |
