Savages stumble out of the gates
Notus routs Salmon River
By ICLP sports/outdoors reporter - Matt Crownover
GRANGEVILLE -- For inexperienced teams, season-openers can be a nightmare.
At least that was the case for the defending 1A division II-champion Salmon River Savages.
The Savages were sloppy with the ball and fell 48-20 to visiting Lewis County last Friday, Aug. 27.
The team that beat Mackay by two points in double overtime to win the state championship last year was nowhere to be found.
"We have a lot of young guys in new positions and just made too many mistakes," seventh-year coach Charlie Shepherd said.
Senior Jake Manley finished with 63 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns.
After a slow first half, Shepherd said Manley got going after halftime.
"We saw some progression in Manley's running game. In the second half he kind of got his feet under him," Shepherd said.
Salmon River quarterback Charlie Shepherd, a part-time quarterback as a freshman last season, was 6 for 12 for 85 yards, but threw three interceptions.
Turnovers ended promising scoring opportunities on several occasions.
Shepherd said the play of the lineman was disappointing.
"Up front we didn't do a very good job at all," he said. "We couldn't run the ball and didn't have enough protection to effectively throw the ball."
Next up for Salmon River is a game at home against LaCrosse on Friday, Sept. 3.
"They're a lot like Notus," Shepherd said of LaCrosse. "They're very well-rounded and have a balanced attack."
To prepare for the game, Shepherd said the Savages will be focusing on the basics during practice this week.
"We're just going to have to learn to block and tackle all over again," he said.
