MIDDLETON - Last year, Kubs coach Jim Engledow could breathe easy on the second day of state track competition; his team had a lead in the hopper and an abundance of points coming in the hurdles and pole vault. This year, Engledow jumped for joy when his squad's only vaulter - freshman Bailey Christopherson - scored two in that event first thing last Saturday morning, May 18.
"Every single point was huge this year," Engledow said. "All the way around, these kids can handle pressure. They've probably been in more tense situations than I have. They showed no nerves. Spencer Crane, he was just smiling the whole time he threw the shot and the discus."
Crane won the shot put with a heave of 50 feet, 10.75 inches, and he came within a foot of doubling in the throws with a 146-5 mark in the discus.
The points in the field put Kamiah in the driver's seat when the track finals spun up on Saturday afternoon. And the hallmark runs belonged to the noted twins, Kevin and Eric Hill, who combined to score 46 points out of Kamiah's team total of 86, with a sweep of the 100, 200 and 400 for Kevin (in 11.24, 22.74 and 50.46 seconds, respectively) and a pair of second place finishes in the 400 and 800 for Eric. Kamiah also got crucial points from its 4x100 and medley relays.
"We were up two going into the last race," Engledow said. "All we needed to do was to beat Logos. Coming into state, I thought they'd be lucky to keep up, but they were right on our heels. My hat goes off to them."
But the traditional track meet finale - the 4x400 relay - has long been a signature event in Kamiah, and the Kubs dominated the race.
"Kevin and Eric, they feed off each other," Engledow said. "Eric is a competitor. He ran into a buzz saw against [Victory Charter's] Conrad Larson in the half-mile. Running the second leg in the mile relay, Eric was behind by 15 meters. By the 200 meter mark, Eric was right on his heels."
Girls medaling were: Jana Ringen (fourth, 400), Bailey Nygaard (sixth, 300 hurdles), Brooke Eades (seventh, shot put) and the 4x200, 4x400 and medley relays.
