MOSCOW--The third time was the charm for Clearwater Valley girls doubles tennis tandem of Jade Gutzman and Tylee Coons, who had been stymied by Clark Fork's McMahon and Thornton duo in late-season meetings in two previous years. They won Saturday's meeting by a 7-5, 6-2 score.
Coach Alex Jensen said, "They contribute a lot to all the girls programs here, and they bring the same qualities to this team."
Freshman Adrianne Nuxoll also qualified, taking the girls singles consolation match against Deary's Peterson.
"Adrianne played doubles all year," Jensen said. "This was her first singles match. She just hits the ball back and lets you make your own mistakes."
Grangeville will send 10 to state, including mixed doubles champions Alicia Lothspeich and Drew Brint, who beat Deary's Byers/Wadley tandem 6-2, 6-1. Nik Stotzem also returns to state as a district champion, having beaten Coeur d'Alene Charter's Ketron in a marathon, 7-6 (7-3), 0-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Both teams will compete at 8 a.m. Friday, May 20, at Vallivue and Caldwell high schools in Boise.
