I have received four copies of the Free Press insert advocating for local retailers asking that we shop locally during the coming months. Fair enough, we do most of the time already. We patronize the Hilltop, Les Schwab, Rae Brothers, Cash and Carry, Ace Hardware, Wells Fargo Bank, Oscar’s, The Blue Fox, Larson’s, Walker’s, Irwin Drug, The Print Shop, Asker’s, Hong Fa, Palenque, Grangeville Builders, Early Bird and Zip Trip. I’m sure I missed someone.
Here is the catch for me and needs to be part of the deal for shopping locally: I am a Christian, a very tired and angry Christian. I am weary of the assaults on my faith by my government and every left-wing atheist, secular and Muslim group in the world. I am tired but capitulation is not in my nature. I don’t want to be greeted by print ads shouting “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings” and I resent being greeted by employees of local retailers with similar vocal outpourings. It is Christmas, that is the season and Christ is the reason for the season.
Local retailers want my business? Greet me with Merry Christmas, not some ACLU-approved statement. I speak only for myself but here is the deal, I shop locally and you greet me appropriately. You do that and I continue to shop locally. You fail and I will respond with taking my business to a more Christian-friendly competitor of yours. I am not part of a movement and again, speak only for myself but I am serious. I am a tired Christian but I will not abandon my faith.
