GRANGEVILLE — Area children will soon have a chance to experience something that hasn’t been offered in Grangeville for at least 15 years: gymnastics.
Lynn Welborn, who formerly ran Prairie Gymnastics and Mt. Idaho Gymnastics, will soon come out of retirement to offer some basic classes at The Gym.
“One of my former competitive gymnasts, Emily Chapman, and I will be offering some classes on a limited basis,” explained Welborn. Since both of them work as RNs fulltime, Welborn said, classes will be limited in size and offered only Wednesday evenings at this time.
Those who have children ages 6 to 14 can call Welborn at 451-4778. Classes will begin Jan. 15. At a later date, Chapman will offer a “tiny tumbler” class for those ages 3 to 5.
“Right now we will get a list built up and assess what kind of abilities we have and divide the age groups up,” Welborn said.
During her years as a gymnastic coach, Welborn trained more than 750 local youth.
“Retiring was the most difficult thing I have ever done but at the time my husband was in a very serious accident and I had to change some of my priorities,” she explained.
The Welborn’s son, Ryan, was a three-time collegiate gymnastics champion at the University of Washington.
“I love the sport and even if we can offer only the basics it’s still great for the kids,” she said.
