Savages advance: Salmon River 56, Kootenai 6

— Salmon River made short work of Kootenai, defeating the Warriors 56-6 during the opening round of the 1AD2 playoffs Saturday. The Savages struck first on a throw from Leighton Vander Esch to Jimmy Shepherd but misfired on the two-point try. Kootenai answered with a 75-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter, but instead of igniting an offense-heavy competition, the big play lit a fire under Salmon River, which did not allow another point. Vander Esch then hit McCoy Hale with a touchdown pass, then used some misdirection to spring Terrun Zolman wide open for the conversion, which made it 14-6. Vander Esch ran for the 22-6 marker, connecting with Shepherd for the extra points on the first play of the second quarter. Vander Esch broke a long run to make it 30-6 after Hale's conversion. Vander Esch struck again with a run for 36-6, and again for 44-6, converting with a pass to Payton Herzig 35 seconds before halftime. Shepherd broke a long run for a score early in the third quarter, and Salmon River ended the game on a Shepherd run.

The Savages will play Dietrich in the semifinals, at a time, date and location to be finalized on Monday. [UPDATE: Dietrich will host Salmon River at Dietrich HS on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. MT.]
