Grangeville The Orofino Maniacs played up to their nickname last Tuesday night, Oct. 1. After using a lengthy rally point to swing momentum in their favor, Orofino surged to victory over Grangeville (25-17, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19).
The Bulldogs’ had the first game in their grip until Orofino’s surge, which put GHS to a 16-10 deficit. Grangeville closed to within 14-16 on kills by Hailey Sullivan, Chantel Key and Madison Brown.
Orofino’s Makinze Gering put Grangeville off-balance with her serve during the second game. As soon as GHS was able to deliver a good pass to Hannah Baker for a set, Grangeville broke the run with a smash by Delanie Adams.
Grangeville closed within 12-15 on an ace by Addie Lutz. Orofino rattled off another big run and blunted another GHS rally to lead 2-0.
Grangeville seized momentum when Brown slammed back a free ball during the third game.
The fourth game was close throughout, as Key’s hits repeatedly answered Orofino thumper Taylor Erbst.
Erbst delivered a withering spike for a 19-17 Orofino lead. After that, three consecutive GHS errors swung the match to Orofino.
Grangeville will play a league tri-match at St. Maries on Saturday, Oct. 12.
