Steelhead rule change affects S.F. Clearwater

Bag limits have changed on the Main Stem, North Fork, South Fork, and Middle Fork Clearwater rivers; now allowed are one adipose clipped steelhead per day and two in possession.

Allowed sizes have changed on the Main Stem from the mouth upstream to the Orofino Bridge and the North Fork Clearwater River. Only adipose clipped steelhead less than or equal to 28 inches can be harvested.

These changes, which went into effect on Tuesday, Oct. 15, were announced by Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game last Thursday, Oct. 10.

IDFG fisheries manager Joe DuPont cited a crunch on the numbers returning to Dworshak Hatchery as the reason for the change.

DuPont’s column will be posted in full on

Hunters: leave the weeds home

As Idaho’s hunting seasons open, thousands of individuals will be traveling Idaho’s back country and potentially spreading noxious weed seeds.

Noxious weeds can become lodged in ATVs, pack animals and hunting gear, and carried from one area to another. Even a few seeds can start a new noxious weed outbreak. Vehicles, trailers, pack animals, and hunting and camping gear should be cleaned before moving them to a new area.
