Vander Esch, Ulmer catch top honors

BOISE — A year-end poll of high school basketball coaches, published in the Idaho Statesman last Sunday, put 13 area athletes among Idaho’s best, naming all-1A senior hoopers Leighton Vander Esch of Salmon River and Kyndahl Ulmer of Prairie ‘player of the year’ in their respective divisions.

Vander Esch is headed to Boise State to be a preferred walkon with the football squad.

1AD1 coaches voted to recognize five other Pirates: senior girls Kayla Schumacher (first team) and Nicole Wemhoff (second team), and boys team junior Lucas Arnzen (first team), sophomore Jake Bruner (first team) and junior Rhett Schlader (second team).

For Salmon River, junior Jimmy Shepherd (first team) and senior Terrun Zolman (second team) were recognized among the top 1AD2 boys.

So was Summit Academy senior Michael Waters.

Three Grangeville Bulldogs were noted at the 2A level: seniors Josh Dame and Chantel Key, and junior Michael Wilson.
