GRANGEVILLE – This fall’s Mountain View School District 244 calendar looks a little different.
Four-day a week Elk City school to go through June 18
ELK CITY – Elk City School sees a slightly different calendar due to its four-day school week program.
School will start with the rest of the district Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Thanksgiving break will be Nov. 26-28 and Christmas break Dec. 22-Jan. 1 (last day Dec. 19 and back in session Jan. 5). Spring break is also the same, March 30-April 3.
Students in Elk City won’t see their last day of school until Thursday, June 18.
The decision to go to a four-day week in Elk City was overwhelmingly supported by the community in 2011 and started that August. Parents now have the freedom to make out-of-the-area appointments on Fridays and teachers use the time for professional days.
Elk City has approximately 15 students in grades kindergarten through eighth. Upon reaching eighth grade students either work through on-line programs or attend high schools in Grangeville or Kooskia.
The district calendar – available through the www.sd244 website – starts the school year Wednesday, Aug. 27.
In past years this start date has been argued on both sides: Some see it as a way to ease into the school year, especially for the all-day kindergarten students, by attending three days the first week, four days the next week due to Labor Day and then into a full week by Sept. 8. Others have seen this as a start that is too early that does not allow students to wrap up summer work or families to take a last-minute vacation.
“I personally like the school start before Labor Day so that the kids ease back in to school,” said school board member Rebecca Warden of Grangeville who represents Zone 3.
Another major change for 2015 will be the last day of school will occur Thursday, May 28, with graduation occurring that Friday prior to the Labor Day weekend.
For the past several years graduation has occurred toward the end of the first week in June.
“We just feel it’s a better time to end school in May as so many families are already taking vacation days by June 1,” said MVSD superintendent Kent Stokes.
Earlier in the year at a regular board meeting, Warden made the motion to move the originally proposed spring break from March 23-27 to March 30-April 3.
“Spring break was changed to coincide with the break of surrounding schools,” Warden explained. “This makes for better scheduling of spring sporting events. I also feel the change to getting out before Memorial Day is a great idea.”
Thanksgiving break will occur Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 26-28. Christmas break will be Dec. 22 through Jan. 4 with students back in school Jan. 5. Spring break is set for March 30 through April 3, with classes back in session April 6. May 14 and 15 are “no school” days for state sport activities.
This information applies to Kooskia’s Clearwater Valley Junior-Senior High School and Clearwater Valley Elementary School, Grangeville High School and Grangeville Elementary Middle School. Elk City School is on a different calendar due to its four-day school week system.
