South Fork of the Salmon River Road closed for work through Sept. 18

The South Fork of the Salmon River Road will be temporarily closed for road work from Sept. 3-18.

Payette National Forest engineering staff will close the road in order to install a new retaining wall and replace culverts along a six-mile stretch of the road. Open segments of the road will be from Warm Lake Road to the Payette National Forest boundary, and from the intersection with Lick Creek Road to Poverty Flats Campground. The campground will remain open throughout the road work period.

Alternative routes to access the Yellow Pine area during the closure are either Johnson Creek Road from Warm Lake Road, or Lick Creek Road from McCall. Closure signs will be posted at both entrances to the road.

Harvest operations for Moonshine and Ruby timber sales in the Florence Basin area are under way on the Salmon River Ranger District of Nez Perce-Clearwater Forests. Log hauling is anticipated to begin by Sept. 2. Travelers should expect to encounter increased truck traffic from approximately milepost 45 of the Grangeville-Salmon Road to the Mount Idaho junction. Forest users are advised to use caution and observe all warning signs while driving through an active sale area.

Operations may occur seven days a week and are anticipated to conclude by Dec. 1.For information, contact Ed Koberstein, timber management assistant in Grangeville, 983-7010.
