Town lighting ceremony is Saturday

— December is here! Another year is quickly coming to a close… Enjoy this 2014 Christmas season!

Riggins first annual Community Tree Lighting Ceremony will be this Saturday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. sponsored by the Salmon River Chamber of Commerce. The lighting ceremony will be held at Two Rivers Coffee on Main Street, 616 South Main, across the street from the Riggins Motel; you may wish to bring a chair and a blanket. There will be free cookies and hot drinks, caroling and Santa himself.

“Light Up Riggins” contest for businesses and private homes is in full swing. Lights and/or decorations for participation in the Christmas lighting contest must be up no later than Dec. 15. Judging by a committee will be completed Dec. 21 with the winners being announced Dec. 23. Contest rules state contest is for decorations outside or window lights that must be seen from outdoors. Beginning this year 2014, winners can only win once within a two-year period. The judging committee will consider these four categories: overall grand prize is $150, best theme is $100, most lights is $100, and most original is $100.

Riggins Assembly of God Church will present its Christmas program, “The Christmas Cross” Sunday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. Twenty-two children have been practicing since October to deliver warming messages for Christmas!

The Secret Santa “Giving Tree” is set up at the Riggins Umpqua Bank and is trimmed with “boy/girl and ages” decorations to help make Christmas bright for families here in the Salmon River Canyon. Community members can choose a tag, purchase gifts, and take them unwrapped to the Riggins City Hall by Dec. 16 …Santa’s helpers will wrap and deliver gifts.

Food baskets are located at the Riggins’ grocery stores and the Riggins City Hall for anyone to donate food for the Christmas Baskets...all food needs to be donated by Dec. 16.

Riggins Assembly of God Christmas Bazaar is this Friday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call Kathy Scheline at 630-4160 to reserve tables at $10 a table; that money goes to our local Girls Ministries.

Riggins Elementary kids will be caroling on Riggins Main Street Thursday, Dec. 18. Be out and about to hear them singing and wishing you a merry Christmas.

Mrs. Fitch, that’s me, will be reading Christmas stories to the Riggins Elementary students Monday afternoon, Dec. 15, while they munch cookies and sip hot chocolate. I really look forward to my annual Christmas Story Day with the kids.

Riggins Elementary School will presents its annual Christmas program Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. at SRHS multipurpose room.

“Gifts of Music” annual Christmas event hosted by Salmon Rapids Lodge will be held Saturday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m. featuring HotWire Band. This free event is a gift to the public. Cookies, punch and hot cider will be served by the fireplace. The lodge is also offering a discount on this weekend. Mention the “Gifts of Music” event and receive 15 percent off any room type when making an advance reservation. Christmas Eve Service is Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 6 p.m. Contact Pastor Scheline at 630-4444 if you wish to participate in the program.

The annual Christmas open house will be held at Unique Antlers this Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served all day. Guests are invited to browse through the store filled with wonderful creations handmade from antlers and soapstone by Shari and Wendy.

The Tourist Trap wants to help you celebrate Christmas with lots of great buys every day from now until Christmas. It is located on Main Street adjacent to the Riggins Elementary tennis courts.

Idaho Banana Co. and Two Ladies Antiques and Vintage Collectibles have wonderful Christmas gifts for all the people on your list, including plants, balloons, bouquets, kids’ gifts and more.

Debbie’s Krafts has lots of Christmas craft-making ideas as well as Christmas gifts and other unique things at her shop right in the middle of Riggins on Main Street.

Etc 2nd Hand Shop, which supports our After School Kids program, has Christmas gift items as well as many other things for your shopping pleasure. Etc is located on Main Street in Riggins.
