Secret Santa program seeks new leadership

RIGGINS — Lorry Harper and Linda Kern, the lead organizers of the Secret Santa Program for 23 years, have decided to step down from their “Santaing” this year. These ladies put in many hours every year to share love and give joy to others during each Christmas. A huge thank you goes out to Lorry and Linda from the entire community. What a difference these two ladies have made in the lives of kids here in the Salmon River Canyon. Merry Christmas to you two!

The Secret Santa Program is now looking for new leaders for this program. If you are interested, contact Lorry Harper, Linda Kern or the Riggins City Hall.

RIGGINS — Merry Christmas Eve to you and yours. May your Christmas celebration begin tonight and may Christmas morning tomorrow be filled with joy and peace, fun and laughter with family and friends.

Christmas Eve Service will be held tonight, Wednesday, Dec 24, at 6 p.m. for just an hour at the Riggins Assembly Church. Everyone is invited to attend.

Cleo Travis, Riggins bank manager for 32 years under many different bank names, is retiring! Congratulations and thank you for your loyal service to Riggins and the Salmon River Community, Cleo! Join Cleo and the bank ladies at the Umpqua Bank, 402 S. Main Street, Tuesday, Dec. 30, from noon to 4 p.m. to help celebrate Cleo’s service and wish her well in her retirement. They will be serving refreshments, so they say to come hungry!

Salmon River Inn will be open for the Fiesta Bowl game at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 31. They will also have three new 50 inch TVs installed by then. There will be drink specials and raffle giveaways for Fiesta Bowl attire. Dress in your best blue and orange combo! Everyone is invited to join in on all the fun! And as always, “Go Boise State Broncos!”

Everyone put on your dancing shoes and head to the Seven Devils Steakhouse and Saloon for New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31! They are having a masquerade ball with live music starting at 9 p.m. with Bottom Line rocking the house.

The Secret Santa Program was once again very successful with 22 families and 57 kids — babies through teens, receiving gifts and food baskets. Kudos to leaders, Lorry Harper and Linda Kern, to all those who gave gifts and food, and to all the volunteers who helped in each area to help make Christmas brighter for these families. Lorry and Linda wish to thank the entire community for helping make this Secret Santa program a wonderful thing for our kids and the whole Salmon River Canyon! Merry Christmas and thank you to all of you.

Thirty-five single senior citizens, as well as pastors and their wives, and Lorry Harper and Linda Kern were honored at a Christmas dinner made possible through community donations.

There is still time to drive through Riggins Main Street and around the block in North Riggins at night to see the beautiful city Christmas tree and all the beautiful Christmas displays and lights shining and sparkling up Riggins at our businesses and private homes as well. Winners will have been announced Tuesday, Dec. 23. Judging for the “Light Up Riggins” contest was done by a committee. Beginning this year 2014, winner can only win once within a two-year period. The judging committee considered these four categories: overall grand prize is $150, best theme is $100, most lights is $100, and most original is $100. Take some time to drive through Riggins to see all the Christmas displays and lights shining brightly helping to celebrate this Christmas Season. Stay tuned for the winners in next week’s news.

Basketball season for boys and for girls is in full swing at Salmon River High School… go to Salmon River JSD 243 website to see complete schedule — time to get out of the house and cheer on the boys and girls basketball teams.

Wishing you a joyous Christmas vacation and a Happy New Year 2015.
