My brother, who has serious preexisting conditions, successfully signed up for healthcare insurance through Healthcare.Gov. The website worked flawlessly, and he selected an excellent “Gold” plan through Blue Cross of Idaho with a $1,000 deductible for only $326 per month. Even the “back end” worked, and by noon on the first following business day the insurance company had his application and was able to issue a policy number.
The real beneficiaries of this are the taxpayers of Idaho County. He no longer has to rely on public assistance through Syringa Hospital or the county for his medical care.
The A.C.A. is not a government takeover of healthcare. It uses private sector insurance companies to administer the benefits. The only real change is that it requires healthcare insurance companies to treat customers fairly. They can no longer cancel your policy when you develop a chronic condition, they can no longer deny coverage when you have even a minor preexisting condition and they can no longer make obscene profits by taking your premiums and then denying your claims.
The individual mandate is the Republican proposal to increase the quality of the risk pool instead of having healthy people wait until they got sick to sign up. The Democrats wanted an employer mandate or Medicare for all, but Obama chose the Republican design for healthcare reform. Republicans should be celebrating their victory rather than demonizing it.
