IDFG pulls Frank trapper, enviros claim victory

Idaho Department of Fish and Game has halted this year’s agency action to reduce the wolf predation on elk in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.

Earthjustice and four other groups — Defenders of Wildlife, Western Watersheds Project, Wilderness Watch, and the Center for Biological Diversity — represented Ralph Maughan in a lawsuit challenging the wolf management program.

After a federal judge rejected their request to stop the program on Jan. 17, they appealed for an injunction.

In a Jan. 27 announcement of the halt, IDFG officials did not acknowledge either court filing.

“We remain committed to working with Idahoans to ensure that both wolves and healthy elk populations remain part of the wilderness,” Fish and Game Director Virgil Moore said. “This action was an important step toward achieving our goal of stabilizing the Middle Fork elk population.”
