Welborn finishes CDA Ironman in 11 hours

COEUR D’ALENE — Ryan Welborn, son of Lynn and Jim Welborn and 1996 Grangeville High graduate, has gone on to a career in the United States Marine Corps. A major and a helicopter pilot stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., during work hours, Welborn took on the Coeur d’Alene Ironman challenge in June.

Swimming 2.4 miles in one hour, 14 minutes, 29 seconds, then biking 112 miles in 6:03:00, then running 26 miles in 3:45:07. That put his overall time at 11 hours, 10 minutes, 26 seconds — good for 211th place among 2,466 who entered, ranking 41st in his age bracket.

Welborn was a three-time collegiate national champion gymnast while attending University of Washington. He and his wife, Crystal, have two children: Orrin, age 7, and Emma Lynn, age 4.
