KAMIAH — If the cell phone towers are down, the landlines are down, power is out, and the Internet is out, how will you ask for help?
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) – the national association for amateur radio – will conduct its annual Field Day exercise June 28 and 29 to test communications under field conditions. during a continuous 24-hour period from 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, to 11 a.m. Sunday. June 29.
In Kamiah, the 3Rivers Amateur Radio Club will set up three radio stations along with temporary antennas at Riverfront Park next to the Clearwater River bridge. The radios will be powered by batteries charged by solar panels. Last year the club contacted 369 other stations in 45 states, 3 Canadian provinces, and Puerto Rico during the 24-hour period.
The general public is invited to see how to communicate without any infrastructure required. Anyone may operate the radio stations under supervision of a licensed amateur radio operator. Information brochures on amateur radio will be available. Exams for the amateur radio license will be conducted on Saturday afternoon.
