Riggins bus driver cited in crash; child treated for injury

RIGGINS – A Salmon River School District 243 bus driver was cited for inattentive driving following an accident last Thursday, March 13, involving seven children.

Idaho State Police reported one child was transported to McCall Hospital. The driver, Larry C. Barnard, 66, of Riggins, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The accident was reported at 5:12 p.m. at 335 Seven Devils Road. According to ISP, Barnard was driving the 1998 International school bus east, transporting seven children, when he was distracted by a child. When he looked back he had drifted to the left and then corrected to the right where the bus’ right tires went off the road into the soft embankment. The bus continued eastbound until it rolled onto its right side.

A call to 243 Superintendent Jim Doramus regarding this incident and district policies in such cases was not returned to the Free Press.

ISP was assisted on the crash by the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office and Riggins Ambulance. Dale’s Rescue Towing provided wrecker services.
