KIDDER RIDGE — Cause is undetermined for last Thursday morning’s structure fire that destroyed a single-wide trailer home.
No injuries were reported in the May 15 incident, reported at 2:10 a.m. at the residence on 1464 Kidder Ridge Road, owned by Jan Hemminger, according to Chief Terry Evans, Glenwood Caribel Volunteer Fire District (GCVFD).
“Her dog woke her up,” Evans said, alerting Hemminger to the fire. “The alarms were going off, but she didn’t hear them.”
Hemminger called 9-1-1 to report her living room on fire, and she escaped the burning structure with her dog. GCVFD responded with three engines and six personnel, and received water assistance from a Kamiah Fire Department tender.
“When we got there it was pretty much defensive,” Evans said, with firefighters protecting an outbuilding and also Hemminger’s vehicle, which escaped with minor heat convection damage, that was unable to be moved as the keys were inside the home. Efforts focused on preventing the fire’s spread, and the trailer home was destroyed.
Fire crews were on scene until 8:17 a.m., and returned twice to monitor for flare-ups. The home was insured. The American Red Cross provided Hemminger with funds for food and clothing, and four nights’ stay in a local motel.
