RIGGINS — Veterans Day is next Tuesday, Nov. 11. Thank a veteran today for his/her service to America. “Veterans Day has been observed on Nov. 11 since 1978, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls.

Salmon River High School will hold its annual Veterans Day Assembly Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. honoring our local veterans as well as educating our students about the reason for Veteran’s Day. The Pinehurst Quilters will be honoring more local veterans with Quilts of Valor at this assembly.

The annual fall Red Cross blood drive will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 2-7 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salmon Rapids Lodge. Contact Kris Catherman at 628-3572 or Joy Swift at 628-3224 today to make your appointment or you can go on-line and make your own appointment. They are looking for a few volunteers to help during the two days as well as needing cookies for the donors.

Parent/teacher conferences will be held at Salmon River High School and at Riggins Elementary School this Friday, Nov. 7. Parents, this is a great time to check in with your child’s/children’s teachers as well as learn more about what they are learning at school.

“Celebration of Life” for Justin Mann will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. (MST) at the Riggins Community Center, in Riggins, formerly the IOOF Hall located behind Crump’s Chevron. Our dear friend, Justin Mann, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, with his dear wife, Lynda, at his side. Justin was a loving husband, super dad, a gentle wonderful man, and a good friend to anyone he encountered… and he had many friends, most of whom “Jumped in for Justin” into cold water to help fund medical expenses.

Thanksgiving is coming soon… just three weeks away on Thursday, Nov. 27. Take time every day to be thankful for your family and friends, for all the bounties you have, for your health, for your home, etc.

Salmon River High School and Riggins Elementary School will hold an all-school Thanksgiving lunch Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 11:30 a.m. in the SRHS multi-purpose room… parents are invited to join their children for lunch. Thanksgiving vacation will be Nov. 26 and 27 with school starting again Monday, Dec. 1.

November is National Caregivers Month. A huge thank you goes out to all caregivers who lovingly schedule their time and talents for our loved ones. We have many wonderful caregivers right here in Riggins who make caring for others their top priority. Take the time to thank the caregivers you know for whomever they are caring. They are making a difference in the lives of their clients as well as their families. Thank you, caregivers, wherever you are.

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Love those with Alzheimers and give a hand to families who have loved ones with Alzheimers. This disease takes lots of understanding, compassion, patience and love.

Applications for kiddos for the Toys for Tots Program and our local Riggins Secret Santa Program can be picked up at Riggins City Hall or Riggins Elementary School. Names will be given to each group for Christmas gifts for our Salmon River kids. The Secret Santa Christmas Tree decorated with “boy/girl and ages” will soon be ready for community members to select and help make Christmas bright for families here.

It is really special that Dustin Rinker of Riggins, and son of Eric and Wendy Hook, reached the all-time rushing record during this season as 2014 is Carroll College football program’s 100-year anniversary. Dustin’s family is planning a senior night Saturday, Nov. 15, in Helena, Mont., honoring him at his last regular season home game with Carroll College Saints against the College of Idaho Yotes on which Charlie Shepherd, also of Riggins and son of Charlie and Susan Shepherd, plays. Eric and Wendy would like to invite family and friends to celebrate with Dustin at 6 p.m. following the game to enjoy refreshments and help celebrate his successful college football career as the Carroll College all-time rushing record holder! The location of Dustin’s celebration is the ball room at the Holiday Inn Downtown (not the Express) located at 22 North Last Chance Gulch, Helena, Mont. If you need reservations to spend the night, call 406-443-2200 (front desk). For those planning to go to the game and would like to sit in the stands in the “Dustin Rinker” section, let Wendy know how many tickets you want so she can reserve tickets for pickup at the will-call ticket booth at the stadium. Tickets are $8 for children and $16 for adults. Wendy will need to know the total number of tickets needed by Thursday, Nov. 9. Senior Game Day is Saturday, Nov. 15, with a tailgate party at 10 a.m. Senior football players, including our own Dustin Rinker, on-field acknowledgements will be just before game time with kickoff noon (MT). Post-game senior night celebration is at 6 p.m. at Holiday Inn Downtown.

Riggins Christmas Bazaar 2014 will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Riggins Community Center located behind Crump’s Chevron. For those of you who would like to sell your “wares,” booths are $15 for one day; $25 for both days. Proceeds from booth rental will go to the 2014 Riggins Secret Santa program. Featured items will be art, photos, baked goods, jewelry, crafts, plants, scarves, hats and many more.
