RIGGINS — Salmon River Art Guild’s is having its 50th Regional Art Show and Silent Auction this weekend in Riggins at the Riggins Community Center behind Crump’s Chevron! The art show which is open to the public will be held this Saturday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. You will want to attend this wonderful show filled with beauty of the talented artists from our area. Regional artists are invited to participate in this show. Artwork will be accepted Friday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (MDT). A reception dinner for the artists will follow at 6 p.m. (MDT) in the lower level. Salmon River Chamber of Commerce would like to especially thank Roy Aiken and the river guides from Mountain River Outfitters and Wild River Adventures for their preservation work on the “fish sign” located in the parking area above the Riggins City Park. The beautiful “Welcome to Riggins” sign was purchased a few years ago with a grant from the Idaho License Plate fund. Do take a drive or a walk just to see the beautiful fish welcoming everyone to Riggins.

Aviation Ordinance Airman Alecia Hawks, daughter of Monte and Kim Hawks of Pollock and a 2010 graduate of Salmon River High School, is serving aboard the USS Carl Vinson which is under way in an undisclosed location in the Pacific Ocean in the U.S. third fleet area of responsibility. Alecia, who entered the Navy last year, was pictured last week in the Idaho County Free Press troubleshooting a BRU-41 missile launcher.

Cameron Mitchell Shoemaker, 40, son of Skip and Cheryl Shoemaker of Riggins, a 1992 graduate of Salmon River High School and a Sergeant 1st Class of the United States Air Force, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, at his home at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina where he lived with his wife, Ashley, and 3-year-old son, Connor. Cameron also has 13-year-old twin sons, Colton and Caleb, from his previous marriage, as well as three brothers, Matt, Jared and Aaron. Cameron will long be remembered for his great big smile and his willingness to help others and his heroism while serving our country. Family services for Cameron will be today, Wednesday, Oct. 1, in South Carolina for family and friends; military services will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, at Shaw Air Force Base for family and friends; memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, in Riggins at the Salmon River Community Church at 11 a.m. (MDST) for family and friends with a dinner to follow in the church fellowship hall. Don Wolcott, 61-year-old son of Bernace and the late Calvin Wolcott died Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the loving arms of his only son, DJ, following a logging accident near Astoria, Ore. Don attended Salmon River High School before moving with his family to Cathlamet, Ore. Don left behind his wife, Becky; and son, DJ; as well as his three brothers, John and AdaAnn, Jim and Marilyn and Jerry and Joanne. Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. in Cathlamet Middle School multi-purpose room.

Riggins PTO needs you! New and former members are needed for current members of the Riggins PTO. The next meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 8. The more community members who get involved help make our schools a success. PTO is offering snacks and door prizes at each meeting as well as organizing events and activities for our school kids, preschool-12th graders.

Salmon River Junior High football last scheduled game is tomorrow, Oct. 2, in Riggins at 5 p.m. with Council. Get up to the SRHS football field and cheer on these young football players.

Salmon River Junior High volleyball team has its final game right here in Riggins beginning at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 2, with Council. Get on up to the SRHS gym and cheer on these young players.

Salmon River High School football will see action this Friday, Oct. 3, with the Council Lumberjacks at 7 p.m. (MST) at the Salmon River football field. Homecoming 2014 will be next week, Oct. 10, with Cascade at Riggins at 7 p.m. They will have two more games, Oct. 17, Garden Valley at Garden Valley 4 p.m.; Oct. 24, Tri-Valley at Cambridge, 7 p.m.; followed by Nov. 7, quarterfinals; Nov. 14, semifinals; and finally, Nov. 21-22, state championship.

Salmon River Savages volleyball action on the court is Friday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. with Garden Valley right here in Riggins. The schedule continues with games Oct. 7, Tri-Valley in Riggins; Oct. 9, Garden Valley in Garden Valley; Oct. 14, Meadows in Meadows; Oct. 18-21, districts in McCall; Oct. 31-Nov. 1, state in Declo. Dates and times are subject to change
