Felony charged in damage incident to offices

GRANGEVILLE – Crime literally banged on the doorstep of the Idaho County Prosecutor’s Office this month and as a result, an Illinois man faces multiple criminal charges.

A Sept. 29 preliminary hearing is set for Matthew R. Despain, 28, of Lake Zurich, who faces both felony and misdemeanor malicious injury to property charges, and misdemeanor unlawful entry.

Charges resulted from a Sept. 16 incident, according to court documents, in which Despain is alleged to have broken into the MacGregor Law Offices building on Main Street, in the process damaging the entry door and an adjacent window and interior wall. Also in this incident, Despain is alleged to have broken a gate fence and dented an entry door to the adjacent Nelson Family Dentistry building.

A witness reported seeing Despain at that location kicking garbage cans and reported the incident to Grangeville Police. According to the report, Despain stated to police he was intoxicated and did not recall committing any of the damage.

GPD Chief Morgan Drew and Officer Wes Walters investigated the incident.
