Forests managed for USFS employees, nonmotorized people

Letter to the Editor

In the Nov. 20 issue of the Idaho County Free Press was a front page article entitled “Lands management topic at Kamiah meeting.” Please everybody dig out this newspaper and read this article, because Doyel Shamley is 100 percent right in what he says and his facts and figures are also correct, also the facts that Jim Chmelik presented are correct.

Stop and think about who is getting any financial gain from our forests and you will realize that the forests are managed for Forest Service employees and nonmotorized people exclusively, both monetary and enjoyment. Fifty years ago we had a booming timber base economy and, yes, we would have also had a booming tourist economy by this time as the population was growing and somebody would have got it booming; but no, the U.S.F.S. had to basically stop most of the logging. Consequently, what Mr. Shamley and what Mr. Chmelik said has happened and it will get worse, if the public doesn’t get involved writing letters and attending meetings and stating our opinions.

Yes: the U.S.F.S. is our forest’s and our economy’s worst enemy, no exceptions…. The nine worst words you can hear are: I’m from the government, I’m here to help you….
