— Happy New Year 2016! Time for new beginnings in the New Year. New Year’s resolutions are forthcoming. Whether you make New Year’s resolutions or not, may 2016 bring you time with family and friends, joy and peace, love and understanding.

Salmon River parents, you can make a New Year’s resolution to become a better parent by attending some parenting classes where you will learn some new and effective parenting techniques at Riggins After School Kids, ASK, Inc. ASK will be hosting three different “Love and Logic” parenting classes free to the public. All materials will be provided; light snacks will be provided. These classes will be offered on Thursdays, Jan. 14, 21 and 28 from 6-7:30 p.m. Each class covers a different set of topics so come to all of them! Begin 2016 on a better path to parenting with Love and Logic.

Winners of the 2015 “Light Up Riggins” contest for businesses were first place, $125, Tourist Trap Consignment & Gift Shop; second place, $75, Main Street Hair; and honorable mention, Blevins Real Estate. Resident winners are Dave and Kim Olsen, first place, $125; and Kirkpatricks, second place, $75. Thank you to the five judges who donated their time. Congratulations to all who lit up Riggins and thank you all for braving the wind and rain this year at the lighting of the Christmas tree. “Light up Riggins” contest and the Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration are sponsored by Salmon River Chamber of Commerce.

Gracie Barron’s granddaughter in hospital in Boise

BOISE — Gracie Barron’s granddaughter, Areona, has been diagnosed with leukemia and is in St Luke’s Children’s Hospital in Boise; Gracie is staying there with her. Send Areona and Gracie cards addressed to Areona Hibberd, 110 Bannock, Boise, ID 83702. Nothing better to lift the spirits than cards from friends… especially to a child at Christmastime and starting the New Year.

Tourist Trap Consignment & Gift Shop lovingly donated its winnings of $125 to sweet Areona and her grandmother, Gracie. Others are invited and encouraged to donate to Areona at Riggins Pine Tree Community Credit Union in care of Gracie Barron.

Calling all adults who love to color. The Riggins Library is planning a coloring evening for adults. As dates and times become available, I will post them in this column.

Salmon River High School, Riggins Elementary School, and ASK students and staff who are celebrating Christmas vacation, school will resume Monday, Jan. 4, 2016!

January will be filled with lots of new activities and community and school events. Be ready to begin the New Year with lots of energy, new things to do, as well as finish things you wished you had done in 2015.

Out with the old, in with new!
