Amend Constitution? Then do it right!

Letter: C.M. “Chuck” Vogelsong

A few weeks ago I got a letter from a man named Mark Meckler who is trying to organize a Convention of States under article five of our U.S. Constitution. He presents himself as president of Citizens for Self-governance. He claims that three states have already passed an application to call for a convention, with 21 others to come this year. I am astounded that conservative celebrities and politicians are supposedly supporting this effort. If my information is correct, this could result in the complete destruction of the Constitution, to-wit:

There are no qualifications for delegates to a Constitutional Convention. Not even American citizenship is mentioned. Convicted criminals could be delegated – anybody could be a delegate. When once convened the convention answers to absolutely nobody; and any and all restrictions, instructions, pledges, promises and limitations of subjects to be dealt with are out the window. There is no agenda and no authority for one. There is no set number of delegates from each state – nothing!

In my opinion, we need to first amend Article 5 in the usual way, to include positive safeguards as well as an agenda approved by all the states for all of the above and more. The only present stipulation in Article 5 is to amend the Constitution. They could also destroy it.

Wake up, Americans. If we are going to do this, we must get it right. Think!
