RIGGINS — Ray and Kay Payton of Riggins are friends who have helped many of us right here in Riggins and are now in need of some help themselves. Three major events have nearly wiped out the life savings of Ray and Kay. While working as a patrol sergeant for the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office in the summer of 2007, Ray fell off the roof of a two-story house. The results were two fractured vertebrae and a shattered ankle which required two plates and 16 screws. He spent six weeks in the hospital, had three surgeries and then 12 weeks in a hospital bed at home. He was forced into early medical retirement. In 2012 Ray had a major heart procedure at Cleveland Clinic. Then, as some of you know, in December 2014 Kay was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. She is in the process of undergoing four to six months of chemo followed by a stem cell transplant. All this is being done at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The process has required them to temporarily relocate to Houston during the treatment, transplant and rehabilitation phases. This is a family who has spent most of their lives doing for and caring for others. Ray and Kay are struggling to hold onto what they’ve worked a lifetime for. The costs associated with temporary housing and other living expenses are in the neighborhood of $2,000 per month. That is a staggering amount – especially when multiplied by the six months they expect to be away from home. I hope you will join me in spreading the word throughout Riggins, Idaho County, and throughout the entire law enforcement community as we seek to raise a minimum of $12,000 to help them through this difficult time. Ray and Kay do have an account at Riggins Umpqua bank… if you would like to make a deposit, you are sure welcome to do that. If you would like to send a card filled with encouragement, their Texas address is Ray and Kay Payton, Hope Cancer Retreat, 26904 Brentwood Rd. Splendora, TX 77372.

Another sweet idea for a Valentine’s Day gift for that special someone in your life is a DVD of Salmon River High School annuals. Rocke Wilson has been collecting and scanning Riggins High School annuals. He will mail your copy for a donation of $5 plus $2.32 shipping which goes to the Riggins ambulance to help fund new equipment. Even if you still have your annuals, it’s really a much more convenient way to view them and you can zoom in when you want or even print them.
