Prairie’s Dally Ratcliff topped Grangeville’s Frankie Zumwalt in a close match.

KOOSKIA — Prairie, Grangeville, Clearwater Valley/Kamiah, Orofino and McCall wrestlers met at CVHS last Thursday night, Feb. 5, for a tune-up before the regional tournament that will thin the field before state.
It doubled as “senior night” for the joint Rams/Kubs team, which along with Grangeville is set to compete at the Lake City Tournament on Friday, Feb. 13 before the district tournament Feb. 21 at Wallace.
“It’s a good night,” Clearwater Valley coach Carlos Martinez said. “It’s always a good night when we get to wrestle here.”
CV/Kamiah 2014 state qualifiers Zach Wilkins, Ian Anderson, Ryker Grimm, Tyler Morrow and Trey Dominguez all won matches Feb. 5.
Among the Pirates who qualified for state last year, Prairie’s Dally Ratcliff won two matches — both by pin — last Thursday. During his first go, Ratcliff used his left leg to roll a McCall wrestler into a cradle. Against Orofino’s Tyler Vankomen, Ratcliff took control and ended the match about 30 seconds into the second round.
Grangeville’s Frankie Zumwalt and Shaydn Wassmuth — both of whom made state last year — both won matches at CV. Ratcliff topped Zumwalt in their bout — a potential district tournament preview — during which Zumwalt escaped an early near-fall. Zumwalt worked his way into favorable positions later in the match, but Ratcliff regained control and held on to win.
“That was a good match, and a tough one against a district rival,” GHS coach Tyler Bransford said.
At districts, the top four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the state tournament.
