— Three local children were recently selected as semi-finalists for the “Military Child of the Year” contest.

Olivia, Marissa and Jack Kennedy were nominated by their mother, Bobbie. Their father, John, a 1990 graduate of Lewiston High School, recently retired from the Coast Guard. The family moved to Grangeville from Maryland in July 2014. Family and new jobs brought them to the area.

Olivia graduated from Grace Christian Academy of Maryland and was the class of 2014 salutatorian. She was the 2014 Distinguished Young Woman of Southern Maryland (formerly Junior Miss). She attends Lewis-Clark State College where she is on the dean’s list. She will be representing LCSC at the Region 7 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. She is currently portraying “Julia” in the musical “The Wedding Singer,” which is currently playing at the Lewiston Civic Theatre. She was a lifeguard for the Grangeville City Pool last summer. As a military child, she moved seven times and experienced four years of deployments.

Marissa is a sophomore at Grangeville High School. She was selected for and will participate in All-Northwest Choir. She is a varsity cheerleader and will be in her school’s upcoming play. She will also represent GHS as attorney general at Idaho Youth Legislature. As a military child, she moved six times and experienced nearly four years of deployments.

John “Jack” is a seventh grader at Grangeville Elementary Middle School (GEMS). He is part of the quiz bowl team, played on the basketball team, and was the runner-up at the GEMS geography bee. He is also a patrol leader for Boy Scout Troop 555 in Grangeville. As a military child, he moved five times and experienced two years of deployments.

The family is awaiting information to see if the children will be finalists in the contest. Go to http://www.operationhomefront.net/highlight/2970 for details.
