‘Choose Idaho’ Program encourages local hires

Invite family, friends to work in Idaho through new program

Idaho residents who would like to see family and friends stay or move back to Idaho for work are being urged to go to, send an electronic postcard to their loved ones and invite them to upload their resumes.

A professional Idaho Department of Labor recruiter will personally respond and look for opportunities that match the job seeker’s skill set.

Choose Idaho is an employee retention and recruiting initiative designed to connect incoming resumes with Idaho employers. Idaho Department of Labor recruiters are working with 552 clients and so far, have found potential matches for 138 job seekers and 229 employers since the program launched in September.

According to the department research analysts, one in five Idaho employers is expected to hire in 2015. The state’s unemployment rate has been dropping from a peak of 8.8 percent in late 2010 to 4.1 percent in November, while the number of workers without jobs has fallen from more than 67,000 to 32,000.

Also, as the number of working-age adults in the labor force falls, the department’s occupational projections show a significant labor shortage over the coming decade. Jobs are projected to increase by 109,000 jobs while the labor force is expected to expand by less than 14,000.

“That gap should be enough of a motivator to provide opportunities for underemployed Idahoans to submit their resumes for more skill-appropriate careers and for anyone interested in coming home to a good quality of life to choose Idaho,” said Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter.

The department’s business services specialists are currently helping Idaho companies identify training resources and list hard-to-fill jobs. Additional business services for employers include customized recruiting and hiring support, tips on complying with labor laws, and controlling unemployment insurance costs.

Paper postcards can be picked up at any of the department’s 25 local offices throughout the state and can be ordered for distribution at conventions, college and university homecomings and holiday and alumni association events. For an office directory, visit and click on “Contact Us.”
