NICI escapees back in Idaho County to face charges in 2014 incident

GRANGEVILLE – More than a year after their escape from incarceration at Cottonwood, two former North Idaho Correctional Institution inmates are set for hearings on these charges.

Ridge S. Dains of Boise, and Caleb J. Thomas of Caldwell each face a felony escape charge.

Dains and Thomas were on retained jurisdiction riders at North Idaho Correctional Institution (NICI) at Cottonwood when on the night of Jan. 17-18, 2014, they are alleged to have escaped from the minimum security facility, and stole firearms, clothes and a vehicle during their flight, and fled north. Near Walla Walla on Jan. 20 they were recognized by a store clerk and subsequently apprehended.

On June 15, Dains entered a not guilty plea to the charge and is set for a July 13 hearing. A court hearing is pending for Thomas.

Charges in Idaho County have been placed on hold pending the pair completing felony sentencing terms on unrelated charges they incurred in Washington State.
