Corral Dust

By an Old Cowpoke

For several decades in past issues, a column entitled “Corral Dust” ran. In honor of the upcoming Border Days season, we have decided to revive this old standby. It will include all the Border Days news, gossip and dirty laundry (OK, we’ll keep it clean. And fun.) If you have news for “Corral Dust,” e-mail it to

Mark your calendars as the Grangeville Border Days 2015 celebration is set for July 3, 4 and 5.

If you haven’t already heard, Vern and Kitty Agee of Harris Ridge will serve as the 2015 Border Days grand marshals. The Agees, now retired, were longtime cattle ranchers who raised five children on the ridge outside of Kooskia.

Although the humble couple was planning to keep it under wraps and “not make too big a deal,” the word got out quickly:

“It was the grandkids with Facebook!” laughed Kitty. “My sister called from Portland and congratulated us before we even told her!”

Harris Ridge is not for the faint-of-heart. The steep, windy road is good and well-maintained; however, the drop-offs are sharp. Don’t look down if you don’t like heights.

“How did you like the road?” smiled Vern first thing upon the paper’s visit.

A note to anyone who makes the drive: Kitty’s homemade cherry pie with perfect flaky crust, not too tart, not too sweet, is worth the trip. And the views are breathtaking.
