Second NICI escapee gets 2-5 years in 2014 incident

— The second half in a 2014 joint escape from NICI has earned more time behind bars.

At his Sept. 28 sentencing in District Court, Ridge S. Dains of Boise was ordered to serve a minimum of two years and a maximum of five with the Idaho Department of Correction. This sentence will be served consecutively (in addition to) a two-to-five sentence ordered in Canyon County on 2013 felony charges incurred there for burglary and grand theft.

Dains, along with Caleb J. Thomas of Caldwell, were North Idaho Correctional Institution inmates serving retained jurisdiction riders at the Cottonwood facility when on Jan. 17, 2014, they escaped. The pair stole firearms, clothes and a vehicle during their flight, and fled north. Near Walla Walla on Jan. 20 they were recognized by a store clerk and subsequently apprehended.

Thomas was sentenced in August to serve a two-to-five sentence concurrently with time ordered in felony convictions out of Payette and Canyon counties.

Danes was represented by counsel Victoria Olds. Idaho County Prosecutor Kirk MacGregor handled the case, presided over by District Judge Greg FitzMaurice.
