Five locals qualify

Cross-country

— Clearwater Valley’s Cole Olsen placed second at the 1AD1 boys regional last Thursday, Oct. 22, with a PR time (16:59) he attributed in part to the heightened competition.

“It was a fast-paced course,” Olsen said. “It was full of great competitors that really pushed me to do as well as I did. All I can do now is be excited and try to be prepared for state.”

Olsen’s time makes him one of just five in the 1A classification who have reported a sub-17 5,000 meter run to athletic.net this season.

Olsen, who ran in the 19s at state last year, helped launch CV’s team with coach Elvin Pfefferkorn.

Also qualifying in the 1A ranks were Prairie girls Kylie Tidwell (fourth, 23:21) and Leah Higgins (seventh, 24:08). Tidwell’s time rates 16th statewide, and Higgins’ is 25th, per athletic.net — a database which is not comprehensive, but is the best available.

In the 2A race, Grangeville’s Diego Barela and Emily Kaschmitter both qualified.

Barela (third, 17:28) said “the whole team ran close to a minute faster from their previous times on the course.”

“It was actually a pretty straightforward ordinary race, I got out front easily and didn't have to fight for elbow room at all,” Barela said. “State will most likely be a very different situation though.”

Kaschmitter (third, 23:15) said she “was actually in second place until the last 100 meters, then one girl passed me, putting me in third.”

Coming — All classifications will run on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Farragut State Park in Coeur d’Alene, with races to begin with the 1A girls’ race at 10 a.m. The 1A boys are slated for 11:30 a.m., with the 2A boys at 1 p.m. and the 2A girls at 2 p.m.

Note these race times are approximate.
